The market for Klay Thompson is heating up, and it remains unclear whether he will be traded or ultimately receive a buyout. Teams around the league are waiting to see what the Dallas Mavericks decide to do.
The Miami Heat have been interested ever since the rumors began to surface. Miami is looking to add more shooting to its lineup.
“Dallas Mavericks guard Klay Thompson, a five-time All Star and the fourth-most prolific three-point shooter in NBA history, has emerged as a player of strong interest to the Miami Heat, multiple sources said in recent days. The Heat has interest in adding Thompson whether LeBron James joins the Heat or not, a source said,” Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson wrote.
While the Heat have long been viewed as the favorites to land Thompson, the Los Angeles Lakers have now emerged as another potential destination.
“The Lakers are emerging as a potential destination for Klay Thompson. Thompson would be set up consistently for great shots by Luka Doncic, an attractive element. LA also possesses the necessary salary-matching contracts to pull off a trade instead of competing after a buyout,” NBA reporter Evan Sidery wrote.
The good news for the Lakers is that Thompson would reportedly welcome a return to Los Angeles, where he still owns a home.
“My understanding is that Thompson would welcome a return to Los Angeles, where he spent part of his childhood and still owns a home. The Miami Heat are another team frequently mentioned in NBA circles as a potential landing spot for the future Hall of Famer,” The Athletic’s Christian Clark wrote.
The Lakers would be an ideal fit for the four-time NBA champion. Thompson is the son of Lakers legend Mychal Thompson, and playing alongside Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves would create plenty of open looks for one of the greatest shooters in NBA history.
Thompson has earned $298 million throughout his NBA career. Although his production has declined in recent seasons, he remains one of the greatest shooters the game has ever seen and could still thrive in the right situation.
